Be honest… do you neglect to wear your mouthguard? That’s okay – there’s no time like the present to pick up this good habit! After all, the last thing you want is for your morning on the court, afternoon on the field, or evening on the rink to result in a stressful or painful dental injury. With this in mind, keep reading to learn a few sports and activities when you absolutely need to wear a mouthguard to protect your smile. 10 Contact Sports That Require a Mouthguard Naturally, some sports have a lot more contact than others. To prevent an injury, you wear kneepads, helmets, and other protective equipment. Of course, a mouthguard should be on that list as well if you play: • Basketball • Boxing • Hockey • Football • Lacrosse • Martial Arts • Rugby • Soccer • Wrestling • Volleyball 8 Additional Activities Where Wearing a Mouthguard Is Smart Even non-contact sports can potentially damage your teeth, especially if a rogue ball comes flying toward your mouth or you take a bad fall. For these reasons, it’s also recommended that you wear a mouthguard when participating in: • Gymnastics • Racquetball • Skateboarding • Skiing • Surfing • Weightlifting • Skydiving • Baseball A Few Other Ways to Protect Your Teeth During Sports Wearing a mouthguard during practices and games is an important step toward keeping your teeth and gums protected. Of course, it’s not the only best practice. To keep your smile in good shape, it’s important that you implement a solid oral hygiene routine, even before an early morning practice or a long day on the field. You should also avoid drinking sports and energy drinks, particularly the ones that are loaded with added sugar. Lastly, make sure to visit your dentist biannually for a checkup and cleaning so any damage to your teeth is detected before it becomes a sudden dental emergency. How to Handle a Dental Emergency If you knock-out a tooth, loosen a restoration, or cut your lip, do your best not to panic. After taking a few deep breaths, assess the damage as best as you can. If you aren’t experiencing any potentially life-threatening symptoms (i.e., fractured jaw, uncontrollable bleeding, difficulty breathing), then you should call your emergency dentist right away. That way, they can restore your pain-free smile as quickly as possible. If, on the other hand, you are experiencing a potentially life-threatening symptom, then you should call 911 or head to the nearest ER. After you’ve received the medical attention you need, you can call your dental team for a same-day appointment. Even though a mouthguard is a small appliance, it can play a big role in protecting your smile. So, if you don’t have one or need a new one, then get in touch with your dentist today!
