The Pure Tone hearing test is a requisite for those who wish to use a device that can help them with their ability to hear. These aids (the devices) are small pieces of hardware and technology that are placed inside, around or on the outer part of the ear in order to amplify and enhance the person's listening and perception of sound. They play a major role in helping people regain full or partial function of their ears. These devices can be adjusted and set in a manner that is in accordance of the results of the examination that was done on the individual. Although there are a variety of tests that are done, the pure tone one is crucial in determining important aspects of the impairment, if there is one. How It Works The pure tone hearing test works by introducing several faint tones to the individual being tested and doing so in varying pitches. The person is requested to use earphones for the examination and it is actually more effective to do so. There are instances when the individual may not be receptive to the device (young children are notorious for this) and he or she may be placed in a soundproof booth to simulate the screening. Experts find that the soundproof booth method is not as reliable as actually wearing earphone because both ears can hear the tone and it is difficult to determine which ear heard it better. Usually, the introduction of the tone is done from the lowest frequency to the highest possible. The individual who is being tested is instructed to show a reaction if he or she hears the tone by doing a predetermined action, such as raising a finger, giving a predetermined word like "yes" or pressing a button. All these signs should indicate that the individual heard a tone. The result of this singular hearing test is recorded and will be assessed by an expert audiologist. Younger children may also need to undergo a similar examination under a different environment. Visual reinforcement audiometry is a similar screening that presents tones or sounds but the reaction of the child is to look at the place where the sound comes from. To ensure that the child will look to where the sound emanates, he or she needs to be trained several times and be rewarded with an actual image or vision. This method is usually performed on children more than six months old up to two years old. Conditioned play audiometry is also a similar way of testing a child's ability to hear but through a different way. Training is necessary for this examination and the child is encouraged to do a specific action when he or she hears a sound. These are just a few of the techniques in implementing this specific kind of hearing test. The results may need to be supplemented by others tests and examinations as well for a more conclusive recommendation for the patient regarding the use of a device.
