There have been many developments to improve patient-outcomes during and after hip replacement operations but the making of ceramic hip implants may help in making the prosthesis last longer, health care providers say. The problems encountered with earlier versions of these implants are wear and tear, loosening, dislocation, breakage of the prosthesis and metal poisoning. These may be lessened by the help of a ceramic hip implant. Orthopedic specialists believe that there is no one type of hip implant that may be considered as the best but an implant may be chosen over others when it best fits the need of the patient. Ceramics were considered to be the most durable material to be ever used in these prostheses but there were problems in the previous design. The main problem with the ceramic designs earlier was the risk of the implant shattering. There were even some patients who had problems with the implant giving off a squeaking sound when they were moving. However, the newer designs of these ceramic hip implants promised to be better than the ones before. Many are wondering if this is indeed true because there are still some men and women who fear having their implants shattered. Although the squeaking seems to still be a problem found in the new design, this is considered to be better because it was found to be more durable than metal. It has the lowest wear rate when compared to polyethylene and metal. In some of the designs, manufacturers included a highly cross-linked polyethylene bearing that is stabilized by vitamin E. The implants bearing is expected to last longer because vitamin E acts as a natural antioxidant which protects cells from the damage caused by free radicals. Hence, the patient may not worry of their prosthesis for the next 15 or 20 years. Patients do not need to worry of the wear particles circulating in their body because study shows that there is no systemic distribution of wear products unlike the much publicized metal poisoning in metal-on-metal implants. It was found that chromium and cobalt ions were present in the blood of several patients who had the all-metal hip replacement. It is even possible for the patient to have pain and instability of the implant due to the wear and tear of the prosthesis. The much discussed DePuy Pinnacle hip implant legal action taken by some of the patients rooted from this problem. Men and women who have had problems with their implants visited the DePuy Pinnacle Lawsuit Information Center at depuypinnaclelawsuit.com to know how to file a case.
