I’m an experienced fitness trainer and I’m always interested to know why people come to me to exercise. Some are exercising for weight loss while others work out for muscle gain. Some are looking for improved sports performance and others simply want to look good on the beach. While each of these fitness goals is different, they all earn the exerciser a special free bonus; improved health. Health is often undervalued as, until you lose it, you might not realize how much you take it for granted. It’s only when you become ill that you realize your health is something to be cherished. Regular exercise can have a profound effect on your health and in this article I want to tell you about a few diseases that can be controlled if not altogether avoided if you work out consistently. Note: if you suffer from any of these conditions you should get a check up from your doctor before embarking on any new exercise routine and even then you would do well to do so under the supervision of a qualified fitness trainer. Coronary heart disease In simple terms, coronary heart disease is the interruption of blood flow to the heart. The blood vessels supplying the heart become partially or completely blocked (or occluded in medical speak) and this means your heart is starved of oxygen. If things get bad enough, this condition may warrant a bypass operation. Exercise has been shown to reduce the severity of CHD. Experts agree that the leading cause of heart disease is being sedentary so exercise really is an important part of keeping your ticker in good shape! Osteoporosis Literally meaning porous bones, osteoporotic bone is very weak and prone to fracture. As you age, part of the natural process is a reduction in overall bone mass. If left unchecked, this means that a simple accidental trip could result in a debilitating broken hip. Bones, like muscles, get stronger with exercise and regular workouts can help keep bone loss to an absolute minimum. Hypertension Also known as high blood pressure, hypertension places an inordinate stress on many of the organs in your body, not least your kidneys. Exercise has been proven to lower blood pressure without the use of drugs. Get your blood pressure tested on a regular basis as there are no outward signs for hypertension. If you are a regular exerciser, you are already doing something important for avoiding this often-called silent killer. Diabetes Elevated blood glucose can have a huge impact on your health. From your eyes to your kidneys to your feet, hyperglycemia (that’s high blood glucose by the way) is really best avoided. Diabetes is a metabolic disorder in which you are unable to use glucose efficiently and so it builds up in your blood. There are two main types of diabetes, both of which can in part at least be controlled with regular exercise and a good diet. Non-specific back pain A large percentage of the population will, at some time in their life, suffer debilitating back pain. Many incidences of back pain have no obvious cause hence the term non-specific. While we don’t always know what causes back pain, we do know that people who exercise regularly are much less likely to suffer back pain than their non-exercising counterparts. Stronger muscles, not being overweight and good mobility all contribute to this. If you want to avoid being a back pain statistic, keep on working out!
