Sandalwood is one of those fragrances with which one can easily fall in love. If you're not into meditation or New Age stuff, then for sure you sniffed this scent in some perfume. Sandalwood, not only smells really nice in fragrances, but it helps them last for longer and enhances the other ingredients as well. What we need to know, is that these days, there simply isn't enough sandalwood out there to satisfy the demand for it. There are several species of sandalwood growing in Australia, India and in other countries, but in India all the sandalwoods trees belong to the state, no matter where they grow or how many they are. Australia is the no. 1 source of Indian sandalwood, as this species adapted nicely there. The sandalwood incense has 2 forms: chips and powder, however, to use the sandalwood as incense, oil or anything else, you must wait at the very least for the tree to grow 8 years, but a period of 18 years is preferred. Some connoisseurs will even recommend a 60 year old tree for harvesting, and this alone will tell you why this tree is so precious at least in India. It's not uncommon to see sandalwood incense sticks for sale, but most likely they will not contain the wood from the best species out there. Usually these incense sticks are colored red, due to the red sandalwood used, which is manly a dye. The cheaper the sandalwood incense costs, the cheaper the ingredients, including the oil used to scent them. It's probably difficult to find the best sandalwood incense out there, especially if you want to buy on the affordable side. In any case, see if you can buy stick by stick, ad try and burn one one of them: you need to look at the smoke, which can't be black. Black smoke in incense sticks mans the worst ingredients possible. There are a few trees that smell very similar to sandalwood, and they are used quite in several occasions in its place. There is even a substance that has been created to replace the sandalwood oil: isobornyl cyclohexanol. Burn or sniff sandalwood when you want to relax, as its main purpose is this, as it even has been used to treat anxiety. If you want to meditate or practice yoga, burn sandalwood before the session, as it will prepare the mind, the spirit and the room for a nicer experience.
