Cancer patients welcome every possible option that will help improve their health condition. Can it be ketogenic diet? Ketogenic diet has escaped from being tagged as a fad diet that will last only for a specific span of time. It has successfully proven its many benefits not only to weight watchers but also to patients who require alternative treatments for cancer. Generally, people with advanced cancer cry not only because the procedures are financially and physically agonizing but also because they already feel tired going to and from the hospital, taking medications and others. Given the chance, they want to start living a normal life again-going to school or work, playing with the members of the family, attending parties and many more. It is for these reasons they opt for alternative cancer treatment. The process of ketosis in ketogenic diet works like this: Glucose energizes every cell in our body, including the cancer cells. Without it or if our body has become deficient of it, cells turn to ketone bodies to burn fats to survive-but not cancer cells. They have no metabolic flexibility to do this. They will starve thereby restricting their growth or allowing them to die and therefore increasing the chances of cancer patients to survival. This is the basic principle that leads to the development of ketogenic diet. This type of diet covers food low in carbohydrates, adequate in protein and high in fat. Dieters should then avoid eating potatoes (including the sweet ones), broccoli, chocolate, bread, cakes, carrots, starchy vegetables and fruits, and others. They are permitted to consume egg yolks, meat, fish, nuts (all varieties), dairy products and others. Sample diet plan includes two eggs, two pieces of bacon and a single tomato (make sure it’s cooked) for breakfast. For lunch, beef burger with lettuce is good. For dinner, broccoli with butter may be enough. Ketosis will take place in three to five days. Weight loss may be apparent after two weeks. Reduction in weight will continue significantly after 10 to 12 weeks, until the drop becomes steady. Adrienne C. Scheck, PhD, a Barrow researcher, pointed out that while ordinary individuals can work on other types of diets on their own, ketogenic diet is also a therapy that necessitates full compliance and strict supervision of a certified dietician. This is especially because persons suffering from kidney disease, heart ailment, diabetes and hypertension may risk themselves to side effects. Several studies are still underway to demonstrate the efficiency of ketogenic diet to function as one of the alternative treatments for cancer. What is probable, however, is that it can improve the quality of life of advanced cancer patients. New Hope Medical Center and Dr Fredda Branyon, over the last nine years, has been a great help to all cancer patients through their alternative treatments to cancer.
