What Causes Mesothelioma?

Have You Been Exposed To Asbestos?

Many people are not really sure what the cause of mesothelioma is, but they know of a person who has been diagnosed with it. In this lens, I try to better inform you of the causes of mesothelioma and where you could have been exposed to the cause.

The Cause

In the United States, it is believed that asbestos exposure is the major cause of malignant mesothelioma. The relationship between asbestos and mesothelioma is so strong, that many consider mesothelioma a “signal tumor” meaning, it can be believed that the patient has had exposure to asbestos in their lifetime. There are 4 major concepts as to precisely how exposure to asbestos causes mesothelioma.

One such theory is that asbestos causes inflammation and inflammation of mesothelial cells. This irritation can cause irreversible scarring, cellular damage, and ultimately cancer. Another speculation is that asbestos fibers interrupt the standard function of cellular structures that perform cellular divison, which causes cellular changes that lead to cancer. The third speculation is that asbestos causes the production of free radicals which damage DNA with the end result being mutated cells that become cancerous. Lastly, the presence of asbestos has been proven to produce oncoproteins, which can cause mesothelial cells to overlook normal cellular division, leading to the development of cancer. The common thread to these four theories is that asbestos causes cells to start dividing frantically, ignoring their standard division cycles. The end result is cellular damage.

There are certain industries whose staff are at a ( much ) greater likelihood of mesothelioma than the general population. Usually these are males over the age of Forty who’ve inhaled asbestos in their career. These industries include : manufacturing, shipyards, miners, army, engineers, pipe fitters, steel workers, car mechanics, and construction workers.

Unfortunately, the length of exposure needed to develop asbestos is marginal, and it takes many years for the disease to surface. Research has shown that as tiny as Two to Three months of asbestos exposure can cause mesothelioma Thirty to 40 years down the line. The disease has been found in family members of people who had jobs that exposed them to asbestos on an everyday basis. These individuals have only secondary asbestos exposure , such as a spouse cleaning the garments of her technician husband.

There has been important research regarding whether or not smoking has a result on the chances of developing mesothelioma. While smoking tobacco won’t cause mesothelioma, smoking in conjunction with exposure to asbestos noticeably increases the probability of developing the illness.

In addition, mesothelioma has surfaced in some individuals that were exposed to radiation in healing sessions which used thorium dioxide. Zeolite, a mineral found in the soil in certain states such as Turkey, in addition has been linked to mesothelioma. In addition, Simian Virus Forty ( SV40 ), a product of rhesus monkey kidney cells, has been shown to induce mesothelioma. SV40 was employed to develop a polio vaccine, but it has since then been learned the vaccine has the capability to cause tumors. Prior to this discovery, millions were exposed to SV40 after receiving a contaminated polio vaccine.
