Weight loss is directly tied to your metabolism. Unfortunately, many things can slow down your metabolism and make it more difficult to lose weight. Age, genetics, stress, gender, and various health factors can all play a role in your metabolic rate. If you think that you may have a physical problem with your metabolism, it’s a good idea to see a doctor or other health professional. Many health factors that can influence your metabolic rate are easily treated, such as problems with your thyroid or problems with your blood sugar. If you’re like many adults in the United States and you just want to get healthier and lose weight, and there isn’t anything physically wrong with your metabolism, here are a few tips that can help you jump start your metabolism and meet your weight loss goals. - Eat! And eat again! And eat again! One of the biggest mistakes that many people make when they are starting out on a weight loss program is that they simply don’t eat enough calories. Restricting calories too much can cause your metabolism to go into a starvation mode, where your body hangs onto every calorie and turns it right into fat. Severe calorie restriction can have a huge impact on your metabolism. Along with eating the right amount of calories, spread out your meals and eat snacks. Ideally, you should eat something every 2-4 hours when you are awake to keep your body fueled and your blood sugar stable.
- Put away the soda and grab the bottled water! Soda is bad for you. Everyone’s been saying it for years. And it’s true! Drink more water to keep your body hydrated and running properly. Your body is approximately two-thirds water. You need it to maintain all of your body functions, including your metabolism. Some health experts are now claiming that if you lower the temperature of your water before you drink it, you can also stimulate your metabolism, although further testing is needed.
- Pump those guns! Increasing your muscle mass increases your metabolic rate. It’s a fact-muscle burns more calories to maintain than fat. So one pound of muscle burns almost six times the amount of calories just to exist than one pound of fat. Pick up those resistance bands. Pick up those free weights. And pick up the number to your local gym.
