The US Food and Drug administration has classified Denture Creams as a Class I Medical device which means it is qualified as "Low Risk". This classification does not suit the denture creams after several strong evidence was published over the past 2 years regarding zinc in denture creams of Procter and Gamble's Fixodent and Glaxo Smith Kline's Poligrip Warning. Usually Class I Medical Device are not subjected to strict safety controls like clinical trials and manufacturers should have the basic requirements including manufacture controlling as stated by the FDA and the labeling should not be false or misleading say lawyers fighting the Denture Cream Lawsuit. It is not known whether Procter and Gamble or Glaxo Smith Kline have taken up any safety measures after the Poligrip Warning and numerous law suits were filed against them. The consumers are the plaintiffs in the law suits and who are suffering from nerve damaged which developed after using the denture cream adhesive creams. Denture Cream Lawsuit experts have also stated that the nerve damaged could have been prevented if the manufacturers of Poligrip and Fixodent had clearly warned the users of the zinc toxicity effects. When using the products. Both the companies in their argument stated that a low dosage of their cream was not risky as per the Poligrip Warning standards. Glaxo Smith Kline removed zinc from its ingredient in Poligrip but Procter and Gamble till date still sells its product in the market The real fact was that both the companies never mentioned zinc as one of the ingredients used in manufacturing their creams in their labels before it was published worldwide in 2008 and they had a very hard time explaining and convincing the court during the Denture Cream Lawsuit trials. Poligrip Warning experts say that the researchers who conducted the tests at the University of Texas, south Western Medical Centre in Dallas were the first to prove that the denture creams were composed of zinc and that was the main cause of neuropathy. They studied four patients who were suffering from the nerve damage and found high levels of zinc in their blood (hyperzincema) and low levels of copper (hypocupremie) and all of them were using the same denture cream. The doctors came to a conclusion that ingestion of zinc by using denture cream was the only answer to the patient's neurological problems. This report was published in "Neurology'. Dr. Peter Hedera of Vanderbilt University who conducted the study also stated that because of high unexplained zinc levels to heavy denture cream use and hence many have filed Denture Cream Lawsuits.
