They babies were found to have developed cleft lips or cleft palate at the ratio of 11 times more than expected in the general population. A Data from North American Antiepileptic Drug Pregnancy Registry showed that children who were born when their mothers consumed Topamax during the first trimester of their pregnancy experience an oral cleft about 1-4% of the time compared to the standard rate between 0.33% and 0.55% associated with other epilepsy drugs. The Topamax lawsuit and the FDA on receiving this data in 2011 issued a stern new warning to all doctors not to prescribe Topamax to any pregnant women.
