Knowing about proper wound care and management is very beneficial for everyday life. Wound healing is a complex process which involves multiple phases. The first phase is inflammation which starts at the time of injury and continues for up to five days. After that, proliferative phase begins which includes granulation, contraction and epithelialization and it lasts up to three weeks. Contrary to wound management protocol of the past, which stressed on keeping wounds dry by leaving them open and exposed to air, research in the past few decades has shown that a moist environment in and around a wound is best for quick healing and reduced infections. A moist environment promotes the formation of new skin cells (epithelial cells) that protect the area exposed by the wound. There is a wide variety of wound dressings and bandages. Among these, Duoderm dressing is considered to be one of the best for effective wound care and management of dry wounds.
Duoderm is a hydrocolloid dressing which absorbs fluid from the wound and forms a gel. This gel keeps the wound area moist. It is primarily used for smaller wounds like lacerations, cuts, bed sores and burns. Once applied, it can be left on the wound for up to seven days which makes it very convenient for the patient.
Burns can be difficult to treat due to the propensity for developing infections from the damaged skin. Duoderm dressing is very effective for burns because it seals the wound area and prevents infections through the damaged and broken skin. In addition to preventing contamination in the wounded area, it also helps in skin repair. It creates an appropriate environment for healing by keeping the wound moist and sterile.
According to a study conducted by the Department of Pediatric Surgery, The Children's Mercy Hospital, Kansas City, Missouri, USA, when compared with other wound care products like Biobrane which are used for small intermediate thickness burns, Duoderm proved to be as effective but less expensive.
Some of the most common issues associated with using a dressing include keeping it dry and skin irritation. When a bandage is put on, patients find it difficult to keep their daily routine such as taking a shower. Duoderm takes care of this problem as it is water-proof so the patients can apply water without any problem. As compared to other types of bandages which stick to the wound and cause considerable pain when removed, Duoderm is painless because it does not stick to the wound. It is available in a variety of shapes, sizes and thickness without a prescription.
