Things to know about IUDs, the pregnancy rates is almost 4% for typical use and less than 1% for perfect use. - It can be used by women who have never been pregnant or by women with a history of STDs or tubal pregnancy - It won’t move from the uterus to any other part of the body - Slight risk of the device coming out of the vagina (explusion) - It may not work in women who have an abnormally shaped uterus - The copper IUDs may cause heavier periods and cramping - Progestin IUDs may cause light periods or no periods at all (spotting is possible and normally during the first three months) Pros - provides long-term, but reversible birth control - No interruption to love-making - Easy to use. There is very little to remember to do - Hormone-releasing IUDs may reduce heavy menstrual bleeding - Low pregnancy rate - Can be easily removed by your healthcare provider Cons - May cause side-effects such as cramping, backache, spotting or bleeding, and longer heavier periods - Increased chance of tubal pregnancy if conception does occur - Slight increase in chance of pelvic inflammatory disease (PID) at time of insertion - Does not protect against sexually transmitted disease (STDs) - Slight risk that it will be hard for you to become pregnant after the device is removed.
