If you want to lose excess body fat, improve your health or change your body shape the most important thing you can do is to have a strength training program in place. If you have hesitated starting this type of exercise program in the past it may help to motivate you to know that this is what you can expect that such a program will: * Help raise your metabolism (your body's engine). Toned muscle tissue will increase the amount of calories you burn all day and night.. * Strengthen your bones, especially important for women. * Make you stronger so everyday tasks and activities are easier. * Increase your energy and 'get up and go'. * Increase your confidence and self-esteem * Help you destress from the worlds busyness Strength training is ideal for weight loss - For decades we have been told to go on restrictive food diet to get rid of the excess fat from our bodies and to throw in some fast walking to hasten the process. The trouble with this is that the low calorie restricted diet usually backfired and would send the body into 'starvation mode'. This is an ancient survival mode to protect the body from starvation and in this situation the body holds on to its body fat stores and even uses its precious muscle tissue for energy. Strength training exercise comes to the rescue to tone up the muscle tissue that drives the metabolism. This keeps the body's fat burning machinery running properly and helps keep muscle tissue from being burnt for energy which can lower the metabolic rate making fat loss almost impossible. Your friends enjoy using the weight machines and free weights at the local fitness center. And you see the results of their hard work - firm, toned muscles and an overall improved more youthful looking body. You would like to start a strength training program, but you are not sure you have the time. Well, think again. Strength training is not as time-consuming as you think. Just 2-3 sessions each week is all that is needed to get you and keep you in top shape. These sessions may only be 30-40 minutes long but, if you work at the correct level of intensity (degree of effort required) you will get results in the fastest possible time. Make sure you get proper help in setting up your program by a fitness professional who can teach you correct exercise technique and monitor your progress along the way. Reap the rewards - Your muscle tissue decreases as you get older if you do not do enough muscle building and maintaining activity. If you don't do anything to replace the muscle loss, it will lead to weakness, frailty and loss of physical function which could land you in a nursing home down the track. But strength training exercise can help you reverse the trend - at any age. Studies show that a proper program will increase the quality of your life and you will be more productive. As your muscle strength increases, you will be able to work harder and longer before you get tired. This means you will have time and energy left over after your work tasks to enjoy active leisure activities which can add some 'fun' into your life. You will maintain joint flexibility, increased bone density and better manage your weight better and easier. You can even improve your mental health and reduce the risk of depression - all excellent reasons to include strength training in your fitness program.
