I received an invitation a short while ago from another old school friend. It was for a backyard barbecue and I was thrilled to accept, as I do love to catch up with old friends. What the invitation didn’t actually mention was that my friend Robert and his family had lately put in yet another fantastic Brisbane pool. The new swimming pool really enlivened a nice but formerly plain yard that sloped gently down in the direction of a Jacaranda lined roadway. Extensive landscaping accompanied the installation, with a total restoration of the block in fact. Several natural stone feature walls had been built, and above each the flattened terrace areas gave the restructured yard a substantially steeper feeling overall, yet provided several individual, flat areas, that could be utilized for both recreation and planting. Almost all of the new plantings actually were native plant varieties; there were quite a collection of small grevilleas in evidence, their vibrant and aromatic blooms luring a variety of wild birds to their foliage. Tree ferns, monsteras and birds of paradise crouched gracefully underneath the few larger trees down the block’s edges. Not only was the swimming pool itself sunk into the ground, but the actual walkways and paved places around that Brisbane pool had been lowered and surrounded by well-built natural stone walls. The stone utilised was a well jointed slate, with quite flat faces for the most part, as well as a mixture of fantastic dark grey colors along with some iron stained yellows and reds as well. The walls appeared constructed in the Irish fashion with deep pointing of an inch or so and the sloping faces leaning outward. Dark coloured mortar was utilized for all of the stone walls which did give a striking effect indeed. The swimming pool itself was constructed of fibreglass and tiled down to the water level. A robust recirculating system had been put in and Robert informed me that it made the cleaning a lot simpler. He also added that three youngsters, mostly ready to do their share, had cut his labour virtually to zero. A heated spa pool was situated nearby in the shelter of a solidly constructed gazebo and though I didn’t try it out, I took the family’s word for it that the hot water was in fact fantastic during the colder days of the short Brisbane winter season. Apparently the pool installation was actually a quicker job as compared to the landscaping and the wall construction which followed it. I certainly couldn’t fault the pool installation job, it seemed sound, smartly designed and equally well installed. It was definitely ideal for swimming in, it was well heated, and deep enough to safely use the sturdy spring board that stood at the the wider end. Thus, one more fine Brisbane pool adorns the hills in the western suburbs, and one which I will definitely be visiting on occasion.
