Most of the country is currently being put through a hosepipe ban due to water shortages, even though it still seems to be raining almost every day. If you love working in the garden and you are concerned that your garden is not going to get enough water during the summer months then don’t worry! You can defeat the hosepipe ban to ensure that your lawn gets enough water. When it comes to gardening it is worthwhile learning how to care for your garden on a month by month basis. One way you can help is to cut back your garden before summer time season so that it needs less water. The larger your vegetation the more water they are going to need so try to stay on top of your gardening to ensure you don’t need to water it considerably. Well-formed compost will soak up the moisture and retain it so your plants will take what they need from it as and when this means that you don’t need to water your lawn and plants as often as you would with your regular ground soil thus saving water. You can also set up an irrigation system in the flower beds with clay pots. Here’s how: get two clay pots with drainage holes and sink them into the ground firmly. Fill both to the brim with water – this water will then gradually drain into your soil maintaining regular moisture over a longer period of time. Ensure to use unglazed pots because water will seep through them and won’t have the desired effect. Place a large water barrel at the bottom of your guttering to collect rainwater. You will be surprised how much water you can collect this way – especially with the weather over recent weeks. If you don’t like the idea of spending money on a water barrel then collect the rain water in a clean bin or even straight into a watering can. Use your initiative – any pot or pan will do – so long as it has no holes. If you do chose to buy a rain barrel you can pick one up relatively cheap online. Over the next few months a hosepipe ban will come in place up and down the UK don’t feel as though you can’t carry out appropriate lawn care routines such as laying lawn seed - water your garden just remain conscious about how much water you are in fact using – don’t have a deep bath and certainly don’t keep the hosepipe running in your garden. A quick sprinkle with the watering can will do just fine. A hosepipe ban doesn’t mean just not using the hosepipe it refers to using low amounts of water through the home also. Don’t empty the kettle every time you want a cuppa, shower instead of bathe and think of ways to save on money. You will be surprised at how much water you could actually preserve.
