If you are new to know about trimming grape vines then you better not worry about it, as it is certainly can be done in an easy way. Let’s take a look below and come to know the details about it. • During the first year of growing grape vines, there is absolutely no need of sniping grape vines, and you need to have them growing up the way they are. This is because having lots of stems and foliage will end up in developing a well-built root system. • As soon as the winter of the first year arrives, it is time to select the sturdiest looking stem and with the use of bypass trimmers, take out all other stems you find on the base of the stems. Then stake the left out part of the stem, as it will now serve as the trunk of the plant. For this you can use grape stake or can secure it by fixing it with a fence with a wire. • Now till the spring arrives, allow the stems to grow and in the 2nd year of spring, start removing two most best side shots growing out of the trunk. • On the arrival of midsummer of the 2nd year, when the vine would reach the expected height, cut down the top of the trunk. This will lead to new development along with the central trunk. During this if any new branches which are not part of your plan, just remove them from there. • During the second year of the winter, you need to cut back all the side branches and even the main trunk, which will leave you with the basic frame for the plant i.e. two sets of side branches coming out of an upright stem. • In the third spring and summer, let the vine to grow, but removing in case anything grows out of the trunk, in order to have the basic framework of the vine as it is. • Grape vines’ trimming in the third winter includes leaving 12 buds along both sides of the arms. This time period is sensitive as it involves future fruit prediction. These 12 buds will then produce the fruit in the 4th summer. Keep in mind that each of these 12 buds should also have 1-2 leaf joints, as when you would be done with the grape vines pruning, it will look like a stubby hat rack. • You need to trim the 12 renewal buds, as to make a space for one new bud growing out of the tip. This practice will continue from the 4th winter and onwards. You are actually making the renewal buds to extend and further grow one bud length in the coming seasons. And in the summer you would see the fruits developing. One important thing to be kept in mind while you are going for pruning of grape vines is that if you would keep the renewal buds short during the dormant season, it will keep the plants under control.
