Many States have various events to commemorate events throughout the year. However, no State celebrates their year like Texas. Texas has a full events calendar for the year 2013. Any person visiting or living in Texas will find that this State never has a dull moment. Texas celebrates the birthday of the first president, George Washington in style. This is the largest event of its kind in the United States. The celebrations last from mid-January to mid-February and good times are there for all those who celebrate it. The Birthday Celebration consists of various activities that include parades, concerts, a carnival, pageants, and, of course, fireworks. A few people were interviewed at the previous year’s Birthday Celebration, and they had this to say, “We loved every minute of it! We hope next year will be as much fun as it was this year.” Texas ensures that every year is always better than the year before. Galveston’s Mardi Gras is a 12 day 11 night affair prior to lent. Although this party is not as celebrated or famous as the one in New Orleans, the one in Texas is packed with fun. There will be more than 30 bands performing on two stages. This will be in the Entertainment District of the city. Every person taking part in the Mardi Gras celebrations will be dressed in costume and all those interested in watching all the fun and excitement can enjoy the parades and processions. The Houston Livestock Show and Rodeo, held in March, is a festival eagerly looked forward to by all Texas residents. This is a three week event and is the second largest one in North America. This festival features professional rodeo performances and competitions and huge musical personalities who perform on various days during this event. April and May are also extremely busy months for the state of Texas. Over 100 different events are featured in a massive festival, the Fiesta San Antonio. The National Polka Festival in May, is a colorful Czech parade featuring live music, arts and crafts, traditional Czech food and many more attractions. May through June, all Texans celebrate the annual Kerrville Folk Festival. This festival was founded in 1972 by Rob Kennedy and features more than 100 artists, arts and crafts, kids’ concerts, other activities and many more. The Great Texas Mosquito Festival is a unique and popular event in Texas. It features a number of fun activities that include a baby crawling contest, 5k run, cook-offs and dodge ball tournaments and much more. The Texas International Fishing Tournament is in August around Port Isabel and South Padre Island. The first weekend in September is the Westfest, which is a large, Czech Polka festival. Dancing, parades, contests and many other activities are planned for this event. The largest fair and stock show, State Fair of Texas, is also in September, and runs for 24 days from late September to early October. Great food, carnival rides, arts and crafts and etcetera are some of the festivities at this fair. 2013 comes to a close with the Wurstfest in November, and Dickens on the Strand in December. The Wurstfest is a “10 day Salute to Sausage” festival held in New Braunfels and Dickens on the Strand takes visitors back to the Victorian era where they can watch characters from Charles Dickens’ novels stroll down Galveston’s historic Strand. “There is never a dull moment in Texas” stated a senior resident of Cotton Crossing in New Braunfels, Texas. “I am glad I chose Texas as my State forretirement.
