Lady Gaga. Kobe Bryant. Jennifer Anniston. George Clooney. Beyonce. What secret do all of these celebrities share? They have all spent time sweating with the masses in “Bikram’s Torture Chamber.” Bikram Choudhury, the founder of Bikram Yoga, poses this question during each of his classes: is it better to suffer for 90 minutes, or 90 years? If you chose “90 minutes,” then Bikram Yoga is for you. Take it from an NYC Personal Trainer, Bikram yoga is one of the best ways to increase flexibility while improving balance and strength. The series of 26 postures was developed by Choudhury in the 1970s and has had a devoted following ever since. Celebrities from Diana Ross to Gwyneth Paltrow have found their guru in Choudhury, who offers a great workout peppered with his own brand of Indian wisdom. The copyrighted series incorporates Vinyasa Yoga postures performed in a room heated to 105 degrees F and kept at 40% humidity. The conditions may sound uncomfortable, but Bikram believes that the combination of heat and humidity helps to increase flexibility while decreasing the likelihood of injury. The class begins with Pranayama (standing deep breathing), which is designed to be a warm-up for the whole body. The next 10 poses incorporate both forward and backward bending, all while standing face-forward in front of the mirror. The “Standing Series” is designed to test the limits of your balance and flexibility, while improving concentration and circulation. Bikram jokes that the Standing Series is just a “warm up” for the Floor Series, but after doing it, this NYC Personal Trainer can assure you that it is a strenuous core workout in itself! After a merciful few minutes in Savasana (Dead Body Pose), Bikram’s Floor Series begins with some deep hip stretches. The Floor Series consists of alternating between “compression” postures, designed to partially restrict blood flow to different parts of the body, and Savasana, which allows blood to rush back to each area. Bikram says that this action is akin to “cleaning the pipes” and improves circulation and overall physical wellbeing. The class concludes with Kapalbhati (seated breathing), which Bikram claims is beneficial to the immune system, and a final Savasana. Once the practitioners have caught their breath in Savasana it’s time to hit the showers, where all the sweat and toxins are washed away, along with any lingering dizziness from the intense heat!
