According to a survey by online company ebookers.com, Britons plan to spend £153million on their holidays this year – that’s a 36 per cent rise compared to a decade ago. Big spenders The survey revealed that Brits will spend an average of £700 while on their holiday – up from £550 in 2001; and that around 81 per cent are planning to take three holidays this year. It found that residents in the East Midlands will spend the most on their holidays – with average expenditure expected to reach £2,943. Meanwhile, those in Northern Ireland will spend the least, with an average outlay of £1,900. It is also travellers in the 45-54 age range that are likely to spend the most while they are away. There is good news for the British economy, with 44 per cent planning at least one trip in the UK; while 24 per cent are expecting to enjoy a long haul break. Seven and 14 night breaks are still the most popular among holidaymakers, while the proportion of travellers taking their partners with them on holiday has risen from 28 per cent in 2008 to 43 per cent in 2011. Cutting costs Holidaymakers can at least point to a competitive industry as a good reason to plan breaks now. The explosion of comparison websites has made it easy to search for bargains on flights, hotels and package holidays, because travellers can compare rates directly from numerous companies. Indeed buying online is the best way to lower the price of a holiday. Most travel agents have their own websites and often offer significant reductions for internet bookings because of their reduced overheads. It may also be possible to use a promotional code to earn more money off your purchase. Remember when booking online however, to check you know exactly what you’re paying for. For example, make sure you are not paying extra for travel insurance, which is usually cheaper when bought separately; meals on a plane; or an increased baggage allowance that you do not require – be careful to read the terms and conditions and be wary of pre-ticked boxes that sign you up for extras.
