Britain’s shopping woes have continued after Mothercare became the latest big name on the high street to warn of hard times ahead. With consumer spending stagnating, the baby care specialist, now in its 50th year, declared that it has fewer customers who are spending less at its stores – with job insecurity and government cuts to blame. Tough times The retail environment in Britain was described as “much tougher than expected” by the company’s chief executive Ben Gordon who believes that consumers are worried about the future. During the last three months alone, shares in the company have slumped by 50 per cent of their value; with sales falling by 12.4 per cent in the 12 weeks to March 26. Mothercare is now increasingly reliant on its online sales and its global reach. In fact, with far more babies being born overseas than in the UK – an estimated 19million in China and 24million in Indian every year, compared to 750,000 in the UK – the company is likely to focus more of its efforts on the overseas market going forward. It is also said to be considering a major push towards both Russia and South America with half of its outlets already overseas.
