Mascara can be a dangerous obstacle. If you don't know what you're doing, you're risking your time, effort, and obviously your appearance. Step One The first step is to apply everything else first. Mascara is meant to be the cherry on top of the milkshake. This includes eye shadow, eye liner, foundation, lipstick, etc. This may be intimidating at first because you'll be worried about getting mascara on your eyeliner (and possibly your eye shadow if you're truly a beginner). In order to avoid this, stick something behind your eyelashes to prevent any rubbing. Step Two After several minutes of checking yourself in the mirror to make sure you've applied everything with balance, it's finally time to put the topper on. The first thing you'll want to do is rub the end of the mascara applicator - the actual mascara throng - on the inside of the mascara tub's rim. This is done to make sure that no excess mascara is on the applicator that could potentially ruin everything you've worked on. Step Three The third step is to stand comfortably in front of the mirror. The last thing you want is to be in the middle of applying the mascara and a weak footing causes you to slip and poke your eye with the applicator. Most people lean the elbow that they are most comfortable with on a firm surface such as the counter. Use a steady hand and place the wand at the root of your eyelashes. Apply 2-3 layers wiggling the wand from root to tip so that the lashes begin to separate from each other. Step Four Use a mascara comb to pull the lashes before the mascara dries; neglecting to do this could cause the mascara to flake and run down your cheek bones. Step Five Even if you follow every step, you may still notice small clumps. Don't worry, the more your practice, the less you'll see these. For now, simply remove the clumps with a small cotton ball.
