Renaissance Clothing and History of Evolution of Fashion

Fashion & Cosmetics
Dressing styles in Europe changed when the Tudors lived in England in the 15th century. Clothes became more colorful and vibrant in the prevailing trends. To a larger extent these changes were only meant for the aristocrats and upper strata in the society. There was immense influence of Spanish fashion on renaissance clothing when Mary Tudor got married in the same century. Now more flamboyant padding was given on clothes and cut lines on dresses and gowns became thinner. While the rich wore many striking pieces of clothing, the garments of the poor did not differ much from older styles. Working community had to be realistic as well as prudent in spending money, therefore, their clothes were made of either coarse cotton or simple English wool which were cheap fabric and connoted the menial work they did.

In the medieval times, apart from clothes, weapons and armory was also very popular. The might of a King In a battle fought against his most deadly foes depended on the medieval weapons his army used. Different kinds of knives and daggers were used by the knights, but most popular was the medieval sword which could cut the body in two halves in just one blow. These swords were earlier made of ebony wood, bronze and copper but later steel was used to make them sleeker and jagged. The royalty had control over arms and weapons and allowed only the knights and upper class to keep swords. Other medieval weapons were catapults, darts, javelins, spears, bows and arrows. Wild animals and warships were also used to attack enemies in a war. Medieval shields, swords, armors and helmets are displayed or decorated in houses, government institutions, museums, books, films, art galleries and restaurants.

Just as Renaissance Shirts and dresses is a fashion rage among youngsters now, Renaissance weapons and armory are being collected by passionate medieval era crazy people who want to dig into the secrets and darkness of the bloody battles fought by power famished kings. Two immensely legendary things to recall from the crusades are the crusaders robes and the crusader helmet. Who would not remember the famous medieval helmet which can be identified by the tiny cross and a brass helmet?

A very prominent outfit that came up in the Renaissance period is the Gothic dress. The corset, apart from being a fashion statement was also worn by people suffering from spinal injuries or back problems. Women wore corsets specifically to highlight the curves on their body that is why they were mostly worn as an under piece with a dress or gown. Women from the royalty whenever made a public appearance made sure that they looked different from the rest of the women. Therefore they wore corsets which were not permitted to be worn by lower class women. The medieval age was all about extravagance and grandeur in which different styles of Renaissance Clothing made out of rich textiles was crafted and adorned by affluent people.
