Every woman need to find the optimal fitness level, regardless of age. Making fitness a priority is a great way for women to find success in losing or maintaining their weight.

The new mom wants to improve fitness to keep up with active children. Women at midlife want ways to deal with stressors of career, aging, menopause and other challenges. The senior woman needs to stay fit to maintain bone strength and improve balance, flexibility and mobility. For all ages and stages, fitness involves more than just showing up at the gym.

Personal fitness is about the whole body—exercise, strength training, nutrition and lifestyle changes. A holistic approach to fitness will give women an increased feeling of wellbeing.

Important Aspects of Overall Fitness

• Defining and Setting a Fitness Goal: What do you want to achieve? Is your goal to feel more energetic, to run a marathon, to lose weight? Fight off osteoporosis? The best fitness plan is driven by an understanding of what you want to accomplish and why. The plan fills in the needs—a set of actionable steps. For example: if you’re a mom wanting to regain your pre-pregnancy fitness level you might have a plan that includes joining a fitness studio, finding other new moms and maybe even consulting with a nutritionist.

• Examine your eating habits. Is there something that needs improving? A healthy diet is crucial to achieving any fitness goal. Drinking enough water, decreasing consumption of sugar, starch and fat, and eating more vegetables and fruit will help you feel better. You can starting using a food diary or join an online support group. Get involved in a weight-loss program, if the goal is to lose weight or work alone to create new healthy eating habits.

• Your Daily Activity Level—we’ve learned that sitting isn’t good for us. Increasing the amount of time we move around during the day is important, even if we’re not going to be exercising. Any activity will help with burning calories, keeping you flexible and improving circulation.

• Time and Stress Management: Life is all too hectic. We have multiple commitments that pull us in various directions—parenting, the job, relationships. Too much stress has a negative impact on our overall health. Exercise is known to help reduce stress. You can schedule regular intervals of exercise and incorporate things into your life to reduce stress. Find a yoga or meditation class, play with the kids or grandkids, or spend time out of doors.

• A positive attitude: Make a commitment to yourself and your fitness goals. Taking care of self is something women often neglect as they tend to the needs of others. When you commit to being fit, healthy, flexible and toned you’ll be one step closer to achieving your personal fitness plan.

Getting fit is about addressing all areas of your life. The first step is to commit to taking care of “You”. A great first step is to join a fitness studio with a focus on individual fitness and exercise. Look for the studio that offers personalized training. Depending on your fitness goal you can choose from working with a personal trainer, fitness classes, a bootcamp or a 90-Day fitness challenge program. Finding the right gym for you is the first step on working on your personal fitness goals.
