When we were children, my mother would drag my siblings and me to the mall twice every year to have family portraits taken. According to mother, she was capturing memories that we would learn to treasure when we were older. At the time, it certainly didn't seem like it to us. To us, it felt more like documenting awkwardness rather than fond memories. Every time the pictures came back, we would pick them apart. While mom saw adorable, freshly-scrubbed kids, we saw frizzy hair, crooked teeth, and weird clothes. But, as always, it turns out that mom was right. While we love looking through photo albums of birthday parties, sporting events, vacations, and holidays, those portraits have become so very special to us. When I look at a portrait of myself at the age of thirteen, I no longer flush with embarrassment at my clothes or the metal adorning my mouth in order to have ultimately straight teeth. Now, I notice how much I look like my favorite aunt Barbara who passed away ten years ago. I also see a resemblance to my own teenage daughter that I hadn't noticed in the past. I'm glad that I have continued mom's tradition by taking my kids to have their pictures taken at a professional studio every year. I remember that mom sometimes struggled with getting four rambunctious boys combed, cleaned, and still for our portraits. Sometimes the photographer at the studio wasn't a lot of help, and, unfortunately, it shows in some of our pictures. Fortunately, this has never been the case at http://www.paulmichaels.co.nz/portraits.html. Our children have been dealt with patiently and respectfully. While my brothers and I would frequently leave our portrait sessions bored, agitated, and upset, my kids are always in a great mood after spending time with Paul Michaels. Because my wife and I were so impressed with the family portraits from http://www.paulmichaels.co.nz/portraits.html that we decided to use the studio for something a little more intimate. Had she not already witnessed the professionalism of the staff at the portrait studio, my wife would have probably been staunchly against the idea of boudoir photography. However, because she knew the photographer, and because she saw how tasteful and classy the boudoir photos (on the websites photo gallery) were, she happily agreed to participate in a photo shoot. My wife was made to feel beautiful, confident, respected, and absolutely safe during the boudoir photography experience. Of course, I should have known that my wife would want a favor in return for her agreement to do the boudoir photo shoot (although she enjoyed it immensely). My repayment was a couple’s photo shoot to celebrate our fifteenth wedding anniversary. I was really impressed with the way the staff asked us questions about how we met, what we liked to do together, our favorite memories, etc. Those questions helped us communicate to them who we are as a couple. That, in turn, was beautifully interpreted in portraits that we are proud to hang in our home. For traditional family portraits, wonderfully creative “action” shots of family members engaged in their favorite past-times and activities, or capturing memorable events of any type, Paul Michaels is the singularly most expert photography studio to be found. portraits, studio
