The 2012 pop dance single Gangnam Style by South Korean rapper Psy has brought forth to innumerable remakes. As a summer hit, it was woven in various wedding parties, it was imitated by students from the U.S. Naval Academy, by the Oregon Duck mascot and you name who else. More than 1.000 dancing prisoners of the Provincial Detention and Rehabilitation Center in Cebu, Philippines have become the latest online sensation as they mimicked the moves, characteristic for the catchy tune. Even the pouring rain didn't make the large group (clad in bright red) stop dancing to Psy's single. It seemed like the crazy choreography, which included horseback-like dancing was fun to perform in the rain. But it was sad that both the wardens and the environment itself prevented the prisoners from imitating the video entirely, especially the part of the clip that includes use of a pool, sauna and elevator. However, those parts were not crucial for the dancing moves of the world renowned inmates to go viral. Now, the popular dance has taken over a Philippine prison. Now, it's time for a little bit of history... This is not the very first time for Filipino inmates to render popular dance moves, since they initially did the zombie dance featured in Michael Jackson’s Thriller video, and then many more followed. One thousand and five hundred inmates performed dance moves set to Michael Jackson’s Thriller in 2007, while in 2010, hundreds of prisoners took part in a dance routine inspired by the King of Pop, Michael Jackson's documentary This Is It. Ever since the prison has become a tourist attraction, putting on a dancing performance each month and selling shirts as souvenirs and letting the visitors have their photos taken with the dancing stars. This dancing routine was an idea of the security consultant for the Cebu provincial government, Byron Garcia. And if you wonder how all this dancing affected the prisoners read what Byron F. Garcia told the BBC web site back in 2007: “Using music, you can involve the body and the mind. The inmates have to count, memorize steps and follow the music.” As for the prisoners, they are quoted to have said the following to Garcia: "Inmates say to me: 'You have put my mind off revenge, foolishness, or thinking how to escape from jail, or joining a gang'," he claimed.
