“All for a solitaire diamond pendant” should have been a more befitting title, except that it does not give the punch of extramarital nuance as in the Mr. Singh/ Mrs. Mehta. A 2010 Bollywood movie with a little extra pepper and some assorted spices to it, is a piece in itself and worthy of being dissected and tagged. An amateur film critic that I am, should find asylum in these movies thrown to a different ball game than the one in view. The film line developing as a story of a young couple Mr. and Mrs. Singh, gets a shake when Mrs. Singh(Aruna Shields) discovers her loving husband to be a “coldblooded cheat” and the chase and peeping jobs done to confirm her well founded doubt and the repetitive bouts of frustration was all pictured in more than adequate proportions in the movie. At this juncture comes Mr. Mehta (Mr Cool- I would name him) who is pursuing career in painting to his own exasperation. The character should be a dream man of all those intending to get a sip of extramarital fun, as he does nothing but try to blindfold himself and yet love his busy bee wife who is out with the Mr Singh in adulterous frenzy fired by the present of her dream item- a Solitaire diamond pendant hanging from a chain; which is focused at the outset of the movie itself. As the storyline catches tempo with the two deceived spouses ending up in adultery to match the Mr. Singh and Mrs. Mehta- which later shows out as an eyewash and temporary respite for the cheated spouses, in many scenes following intimacies portrayed in a subtle yet discernable fashion. But Mr. Mehta scores a bit more as he managed to kick start his career as an artist by painting Mrs. Singh nude yet puts his wife’s face to it and adds the legendary solitaire pendant to it and Mrs. Singh has no complains, thus proving it a mutually agreed upon eye wash. The pendant tinkling around Mrs. Mehta’s neck vanishes one day when Mr. Singh presents his wife with a solitaire diamond pendant chain and there ends the voracity for lust in Mrs. Mehta. She decides to settle up with her husband guy,Mr Mehta and lead a life. But she gets intense when she sees her husband’s painting. The audience gets moved by her change of mind but it was the pendant in the painting which lets her husband have her and impregnate her. Later, they all face each other casually in an art exhibition of Mr Mehta played by Prashant Narayanan, yet the pride on owning the diamond pendant was clearly prancing around Mrs. Singh’s face. Women love baubles but it was not fair on the part of the maker of the movie to denigrate women to such heartless vixens. The movie is a fine work with good music and well thought of plot, and women do cry buckets but a man who is cold to his wife’s affair was a bit indigestible, especially to the effect that he is in love with her no matter what she has done, but the sternness of Mrs Singh which leads to her breaking up with her husband is appreciable. A great truth that a woman never forgives a guy who cheated her with another one especially on a regular basis ;and leaves him though late is a marked historical fact not ignored by Mr Bharadwaj, the movie maker and cheers to him!
