“Surely a man needs a closed place wherein he may strike root and, like the seed, become. But also he needs the great Milky Way above him and the vast sea spaces, though neither stars nor ocean serve his daily needs.” ~ Antoine de Saint-Exupery What in world does that quote mean? At first it seems a little confusing, but when you look at the quote for just a little while it becomes very simple. The author is simply saying (in a more poetic way) that as humans we need to be both grounded and connected to the earth while at the same time we also need to reach for something greater. When I talk about the chakras I like to refer to this as both “manifesting” and “liberating” our chakras or energy centers. What I mean by this is that in each chakra we need to first acknowledge who we are and what we can do today, while at the same time increasing the energy in each chakra to project or “liberate” us to where we want to go tomorrow. The energy in our root chakra, for example, helps us deal with tasks related to the material and physical world, the ability to stand up for ourselves and be secure in who we are. When we “liberate” the energy in the root chakra we have confidence and that feeling of self-worth we need to face the world head on. If we don’t have the proper energy balance in this chakra we will feel physically weak, experience fatigue and perhaps have a manifestation of physical ailments such as lower back pain or sciatica, frequent colds or cold hands and cold feet. Low energy in the root chakra can also lead to depression and feelings of insecurity and low self-esteem. Over the last few weeks we’ve talked about things that you can do to stimulate the energy in the root chakra and I’ve shared with you some of the yoga movements I perform to “liberate” the energy in this foundational chakra. As a summary, however, here are some examples of things that you can do to “liberate” your root chakra energy: physical exercise (like my yoga video in the forum), plenty of sleep and relaxation (like my yoga nidra relaxation audio download, also in the forum), gardening, working with pottery or clay, plenty of red food and drink, a massage, or how about an invigorating spa day (hooray for the root chakra!) So now that we have spent some time taking care of our ourselves and our physical bodies, next week we will be moving on the next chakra: the sacral chakra or in sanskrit the Svadisthana. This is the energy center dealing with our sensing abilities and issues related to feelings. The energy in this center affects our social and intimacy issues and our ability to relate effectively with those around us. We all know what happens when we aren’t picking up social signals properly don’t we? We’re going to have a lot of fun talking about ways to stimulate the energy in the sacral chakra, and we’re also going to have some exciting contributors to help us out. Before we move on, however, I have one final mini video to help diagnose where you are currently with the energy in YOUR root chakra, and help you lay out a plan for liberating that energy. This is a very short video (only around 3 minutes) and it has a very important technique you can use to help diagnose your root chakra health. So grab a piece of paper (or your journal), a pencil or pen, and click the video image below and enjoy. Until next week, Namaste and smiles to you, Wendy. Visit Yoga Guardian P.S.
