Your first date with a potential partner can be an epic disaster if done wrong. Our six-step online dating tips will help guide you on how to do it right from the beginning till the evening’s end. 1. The Predate - Dress for the occasion and the venue you’re planning to go to. But more importantly, dress to show respect. Keep in mind that being overdressed is always better than being underdressed.
- Go easy on the cologne. Stay away from novelty ties. Equip yourself with the proper man tools of modern chivalry.
2. The Pickup - Be punctual. Don’t show up intoxicated.
- Go to the door; don’t wait in the car and honk the horn for her to come out.
- Do not bring her flowers it’s totally passé. You may, however, bring her a small, thoughtful gift you did not purchase from a gas station convenience store.
- Inappropriate gifts: lingerie of all shapes and materials, small animals, the first written draft of your unpublished autobiography.
3. The Drive - If you decide to take a cab, open the door for her, give the driver directions and pay for the fare.
- While fairly amusing, never pull that bit where you pretend to go when she’s about to come in and then stop after a short distance.
- No music. Make interesting conversation.
- If an unbearable silence ensues, you may turning on the stereo, but completely avoid the following: a. talk radio; b. anything R. Kelly song where he describes something overly sexual; c. a playlist of songs that entirely features her name.
4. The Restaurant - Always open the door for her. In the event you encounter a revolving door, go first.
- Wait for her to be seated first before sitting down. At a more posh place, it’s the waiter’s job to help your date settle down on her chair, not on yours.
- Do not order for her. And don’t you ever present a coupon to the waiter while saying, “And the lovely lady will have something of the same or lesser value.”
- On sharing food: If she encourages it, you’re doing it.
- Pay for dinner. If she offers to pitch in, say something sincere like, “No, it’s my pleasure.”
5. The Bar - You only have to remember three online dating tips here: 1) Open a tab and keep it that way until the end of the evening; 2) don’t drink more than she does; and 3) don’t drink less than she does.
6. The Walk - Offer you arm. It’s quixotic and also a favorable method to initiate contact.
- Be a man and go make a move. May God be with you.
- You are not going in, unless she says so.
