Dating is moving online more and more every year. As Americans continue to get high speed internet installed on their computers they are also engaging in the online dating market more often. What people want on an online dating environment may be different then what is desired in real life. People look for different things while online according to interesting national studies. Women are much more judgmental about looks. A total of 23,000 online users of dating services were survey in a study called “What Makes You Click: An Empirical Analysis of Online Dating” which looked at demographic data of users to determine to which people send an introductory email to. These attributes looked at physical features, income, education, etc… What Online Daters Want: Dating is more than just a casual encounter for many of the people using the internet. According to the research 39% of everyone within the study wanted a long-term committed relationship that may grow to something special. Another 26% per just curious about dating someone and decided to take the relationship as it is offered. Approximately 14% of men and 4% of women were looking for back alley casual relationships. Men are More Receptive to Emails than Woman: Men are a little more egalitarian about who they talk to. They aren’t as engaged in being picky and prejudging people on looks along. They will at least respond and then see what happens after that. Women are very judgmental when it comes to responding to online correspondence. In many cases it is due to men who abuse the system to email everyone but it is also due to the misperception that they are of higher status then many men. Men will respond to an initial contact 70% of the time while women will respond only 40% of the time. Women Judge Looks More then Men: “Men are pigs” and men are “just looking for a sexy women” are all wrong in the dating world. The situation is completely reversed. Women are far more judgmental then men about looks in the online dating world. Many women will “judge a book by its cover” while giving the consideration of a response email. Men, on the other hand, are more willing to read the profile and take into consideration other information that makes the character of the women more apparent. 29% of women discriminate on looks while 19% will do so.
