Nobody likes being a beginner; fortunately, it does not last forever. As you create a model train layout with a set of simple plans, you will soon advance to being knowledgeable and an expert. As you start your adventure in model railroading there will be questions as to how to create a model train layout. The reason a planned design is wanted is because there is no fun in looking at a train that is in the box. Motion…the train needs to be on a track and moving. The railroad engineer wants to put on his cap and drive the train. Okay, what scale train is in your possession? The layout needs to be the size which can handle the size of the train, the tracks, and the necessary electronic hookups and other essential equipment. Measurements will be needed in order to fit in the available setup space. Questions 1. What is the size of your model train layout? Standard is 4x8. 2. Will it fit a brief case and require a small table? 3. Need a larger surface? Consider width and height 4. What type of scenery? Country setting, city, train yard? 5. What space is available? 6. Will the space be in the home, garage, or a separate building? 7. Electrical outlets? 8. Will it be mobile or stationary? Planning Your Layout The scale that is available to you will determine the size of the layout. Start creating a model train layout draft of your ideas. The reason for trying to design your own plan is to bring attention to your strengths and weaknesses in order to make your layout a working reality. Additional help may be needed. Do your research and get much information from an experienced model railroad hobbyist. As you attempt to construct the railroad layout there will be questions which need to be solved. Questions will relate to the scale size, tracks, wood, padding, accessories, electrical outlets, budget, items available in the home, items needing to be purchased or made, and the budget. The budget When you do not know what you are doing, creating a model railroad layout will get costly. The cost is the number one reason for doing your research and thinking it out before attempting construction. Building a layout need not be expensive. Start simple and learn the basics before advancing too soon. Cost saving methods including the correct type of wood for the project, creating scenery with items found about the house, and exactly what electrical accessories will be needed for the train set and layout. Consider items such as wiring, remote controls, adapters, transformers DCC systems and much more. Avoid mistakes! Time to plan Take time to plan in order that the features you wish to see in your layout are not just wishful thinking, but can do. The “can do” items also include fitting the budget. Summary 1. Pull everything out which you are going to use or make an inventory of all trains, tracks and equipment which will be utilized. Place these items on a table and list parts, pieces, and supplies needed to activate the model train railroad. 2.
