Are you running out of paper craft ideas? If so, try making some paper baskets with your kids and loved ones. Paper baskets are not just fun to create; they're decorative and functional, as well. Plus, if you use old card or paper stock at home, you are doing some paper recycling, which is good for the environment and your budget. There are several ways to create paper baskets. One is through folding a large paper sheet into parts and creating a basket out of it. Another is by weaving paper strips and still another is by gluing together small paper folds or rolled paper strips that stack or pile together. You can even do away with the shaping or molding of the basket by using old shoe boxes and paper bags at home. If you do not have a mold for the basket, you can use flower pots, vases, garbage basket and mixing bowls as mold. To make woven paper basket, create the base by weaving horizontal strips over and under the vertical strips until you reach the desired size. Cut the woven base into the shape of the base of the mold, leaving an inch tab to be folded upwards. Attach paper strips to each of the folded tabs to make the vertical or upright spokes. Next, insert paper strips horizontally in and outside the upright spokes until you cover the spokes, leaving only one inch allowance at the opening of the basket. Fold in and glue the ends of the spokes to secure the weavings. Now you can attach the basket handle. You can also follow the quilling technique and make tight rolls of paper strips, as many as you can. Then, using a mold (like a trash can turned upside down), begin by arranging the paper rolls side by side on the base of the mold, gluing them together each time. Allow the rolls to go over a bit of the mold so that they can be glued to the paper rolls that will make up the sides of the basket. Turn the mold upright and then stack the paper rolls along its side, gluing them together properly. Repeat this process until you have the entire mold covered. Once the glue has dried, you can then remove the mold to reveal your quilled paper basket. At best, use old paper products of good quality such as those used in magazines and brochures. Not only are they strong, they also come in glossy, colored finish that adds beauty to your paper basket. However, you may also paint your paper basket in your desire color or adorn them with ribbons, paper flowers, etc. After the paper baskets are done, you can begin placing stuff inside.
