Information is knowledge and knowledge is power. The rapid penetration of internet and the advent of quality search engines have made accessing information easy. People instantly turn to search engines for finding information on a wide range of topics that may be as unique as they are diverse. From children to octogenarians, nobody has remained isolated from the phenomenon of search engines. This has become a multibillion dollar industry that is only expected to grow in size and relevance in the coming times. It is natural for sugar to attract flies and the search engine market cannot be an exception to this adage. Lured by the money making potential of the market, new entrants are entering this lucratively remunerative, but highly, competitive market at a fast pace. But it is not easy to directly challenge the monopoly of behemoths like Google and Bing. These giants have deep pockets and resources to drive out competition. You have to bring something different to the table to survive, and Blekko, the new age consumer facing search engine, has done just that. This search engine uses a mix of algorithms and human input to deliver quality content from the most reliable sites. Human involvement ensures that results are free from the scourge of manipulation. Spam and Its Ill-Effects It is often seen that good is often accompanied by bad and vice versa. The massive spread of internet and the information that it provides by just a few clicks of button was accompanied by the pestilence of spam. Unsolicited advertising (this is what spam is) is annoying, leads to immense wastage of time and resources, and has been the cause of many online frauds, and in worst circumstances, even death. The most glaring example of bad effects of spamming surfaced recently in London where the teenage son of an Indian millionaire lost his life after taking some slimming pills. He came to know about the drug through his e-mail since the unsolicited content was delivered directly into his inbox. Low operating cost and low barriers of entry have only been fanning the flame of this curse called Spam. There are many fraudsters and tricksters who are increasingly taking advantage of the loopholes in algorithmic techniques used by search engines to push their own malicious agenda. These spammers, using Search engine optimization (SEO) and other relevant techniques, tamper with HTML pages to put themselves high on search engine relevancy lists. This is where search engines like Blekko come in to strike terror in the hearts of operators of sham sites that are prominently displayed in search engine results but offer very low quality content. Blekko is a search engine that involves the human element to a great extent and delivers results keeping their experiences and preferences in mind. This higher degree of human involvement ensures that results delivered by it score high on parameters like quality and relevance. Blekko is a consumer facing search engine that lays special emphasis on delivering quality and spam-free results. A combination of traditional algorithm search with the expertise of users ensures that only quality sites that are free from spam find a place in its results.
