Towards the end of August 2011, Dell made an announcement to the effect that it is going to be one of the cloud computing service providers. The company announced that it is going to provide IaaS (Infrastructure as a Service) that is built and designed on the VMware technology. The company announced that it will provide the facilities for private as well as public clouds where storage and computing will be readily available as and when demanded. PaaS is an environment for developing and hosting that is made up of infrastructure software, middleware, databases and development tools. The other models in which cloud computing is offered include Software as a Service (SaaS) and Platform as a Service (PaaS). SaaS givers web users internet access to the applications that are hosted on the infrastructure of the service provider. Various applications like enterprise resource management, collaboration, email and customer relationship management can be delivered on the SaaS model. The IaaS lets the system developers and administrators self-provision the networking, storage and computing resources that they need in order to deploy and run applications and operating systems. How is this cloud computing service different from the others? To make a distinction from the other existing cloud computing services, Dell announced that its cloud computing services will include novel strategies of pricing that include: • Dedicated • Reserved • Pay As You Go The Dedicated and Reserved pricing plans are better priced compared to Pay As You Go. This is to encourage frequent and loyal Dell Cloud Computing customers to sign up in large numbers for contracts of longer terms. An interesting feature of this cloud computing by Dell is that the company announced that it will include OpenStack and Azure clouds in the future. It is very early to make a prediction on how these prices will compare to the existing other cloud computing prices in the market. This cloud computing service by Dell has been welcomed by IT stakeholders and consumers from all sectors. It offers a greater choice to their customers and causes a reduction of the vendor tie-in. The competition in the market is to the benefit of IT consumers because they will benefit from the better pricing. Better pricing of cloud computing services means a reduction in overall IT expenses. Forecasting on the developments that may occur in the future, Dell may start selling preinstalled private clouds for purposes of on premise deployment, in almost the same way the company sells server machines with already installed software that is ready to use.
