Lots of people recycle today. It’s a win-win activity that saves people money and saves our planet. One item that presents a lot of challenges to recyclers is the cell phone. New ones come out every day with more and more features that people just can’t live without, so many people change cell phones almost as often as they change their socks. What can a technology-mad cell phone user do with the old cell phone? In some cases, unwanted cell phones can be resold or traded in. Very old, dead or obsolete cell phones may simply be properly destroyed and disposed of by a proper recycling company. A cell phone that still has some life in it may be reused by people in need. In many cases old, unwanted cell phones that are still functioning can be donated to worthy causes. For example, low-income individuals may be eligible to receive a recycled cell phone with a set number of minutes for use in emergencies. Recycled cell phones may be sent to soldiers overseas so that they can call home. Companies that recycle cell phones make a big impact when it comes to saving the planet. Cell phones are so small that it would seem easy and natural to just toss them when they become obsolete, but this is a very bad idea. Cell phones are absolutely not biodegradable, and they are just full of toxic chemicals. Tossing them into the landfill has the potential to pollute the air, earth and water, so it is extremely important to dispose of them properly by recycling them or donating them. When you recycle your obsolete cell phone, you may get credit towards your new cell phone, so whenever you are upgrading, be sure to ask about that. If recycling via the provider of your new phone is not possible, just check online for mobile phone or cell phone recyclers. You are sure to find one near you. Often, recyclers or groups that collect old cell phones for charity will send you a stamped, self-addressed mailer. All you have to do is pop your phone into it and drop it in the mail. Remember that there is no “away”. We cannot simply throw things “away”. We have one planet and limited space, so it is very important to dispose of unwanted cell phones and other outdated IT equipment properly to avoid destroying the world we live in.
