Fiber optic cable is exposed to electrical and mechanical, chemical and environmental elements, so the appropriate installation is crucial to the long-term stability and survival of fiber optic cable. The installation of the cable also must satisfy the NEC (the national electrical code) and local building codes. NEC indicates that fiber optical cable can be placed in the same runway, cable or enclosure and cable television, telephone, communication circuit and calss 2 and 3 remote control signal circuit. Note that you should never put the fiber optic cable in the same enclosure that houses electrical terminations. What is conduit? Conduit is a tube or trough for protecting electrical or communication wires and cables. It may be a solid or flexible tube in which cables are run. They house and protect the fiber optic cables as well as any other type of data or communication transmission line. Underground conduits are also called ducts and consist of one or more conduits spaced closely together. They are usually buried in the ground directly in the concrete casing. Line pipe end in underground vault is called the manhole. Conduit is made from fiber, PVC, PE and other materials. Above ground conduits are made of metal or nonmetal materials. They can be used in exposed or concealed locations aboveground. Characteristics of a good conduit installation a. Good mechanical properties to withstand the forces imposed by the cable installation b. Meets current and future expansion requirements c. Observes fiber optic cables minimum bending radius d. No sharp edges or bend optical fiber cable access to the entire route What is cable trays? A cable tray assembly of the unit with a metal or other incombustible materials, forming a continuous fiber optic cable, rigid support. Cable tray is used in the industry, which greatly simplifies the installation of optical fiber cables. Cable types come in serveral different types including ladder type, trough type, channel type and solid-bottom type. Ladder type cable tray is a kind of metal structure of the two longitudinal girder connecting individual horizontal members. Transverse members provide support for fiber optic cable. Groove type cable tray is a metal structure. It consists of a ventilation at the bottom, and closely spaced support in points or single longitudinal girder. Groove type cable tray by a ventilation or solid bottom channel section as a whole. Solid-bottom type cable tray is a metal structure that has no openings in the bottom. Integral or separate longitudinal side rails provide the support for the fiber cables. What is pull box? Pull boxes are used to break up long conduit lengths for easier and lower tension cable pulls. Pull boxes are usually placed close to the piple bending and long run continuously. You should use at least one cable box every second after 90 °bend, in the long pipeline crossing. When pulling cable box, ensure the minimum bending radius of cable is always observed. Fiber cables pull in a corner case should first be dragged into a loop from the acute Angle of pull box can easily damage the cable and fiber.
