Wireless internet is used as a very general and wide term. If you search for the term, you might find a hundred different applications which may or may not be useful for your need. The reason behind this is that there are various applications of the wireless internet. There are the home networks which need a router but allows you to be mobile within your home and still get internet access. Another application is Wi-Fi offered through hot spots. These are delivered through satellite. Yet another application is the Wi-Fi access provided the internet and cellular service providers. They use the network of the hot spots and deliver their services through radio signals. This service is called as mobile broadband and is the only one that is truly mobile. So you see even if people around you may be using the term wireless internet they could be meaning a different application from what you have in mind. What you require might be mobile broadband which truly offers internet access on the go, but the service provider must be thinking about a home wireless network. You may even have Wi-Fi access at home but you may not be able to set up a wireless home network because of low bandwidth. This would be especially true if more than one person share the connection. Wimax 4G technology is the latest service offering in this field and it looks to be very promising. It involves turning a geographic area into a big hot spot so that you can enjoy uninterrupted internet access in your home as well as outdoors when you are mobile without any bandwidth problem whatsoever. Today, wireless internet technology has been adopted by businesses in a big way. Since this technology allows for setting up of networks without wires for client machines, the cost of laying cables and networks are greatly reduced. Even in places where cables cannot be laid like for instance, outdoor areas or monuments, can now be connected with a wireless network. Most of the laptops now have the wireless adapter built into the system making it a cheap networking device. Since the wireless network offers such economic advantages apart from the overall increased networking capacity, the number of access points are increasing by the day. Improvements are being brought about in the wireless internet technology making it suitable for voice and video applications. Such improvements will enable a widespread use of this technology. The range over which wireless networks can function are limited. However, it can be improved by locating antennas several kilometers apart. Another concern is that given the nature of these wireless networks, the level of power consumption is very high. Such high power consumption shortens the battery life of mobile devices. Due to the limited mobility of this technology, the applications are also restricted to specific areas. Usage during mobility over a wide area is not suited. The risk of data theft is real with the usage of wireless technology especially when the network is unsecured. Novice users while being benefited due to easy configuration need to ensure that they take steps for data security. It can be done by operating over secure networks or by taking steps to encrypt their data by configuring their wireless internet device.
