The New Year has brought with it many resolutions for people to move jobs, meaning that jobseekers should find more opportunities in the coming weeks. However, some industries are doing better than others. One area that skilled people can look at is life science jobs, which could soon get a boost if tax changes come into place. The new rules could see the tax on revenue from patents reduced by ten per cent, making the industry's companies and research and development departments become more profitable. Andrew Witty, chief executive of GlaxoSmithKline, told the Times that this move could create £500 million of investment in bioscience firms, leading to the creation of around 1,000 science jobs. If that does not appeal then environmental jobs is another sector to look to, with the world increasingly embracing green technology. This will be boosted further in the UK by the government's move to create feed-in tariffs, which will pay homeowners for energy that they create in their home from renewable sources, such as solar panels or wind turbines. This is likely to lead to more people wanting to install devices in their homes, which Andrew Lee, Sharp Solar general manager, told Bloomberg will boost environmental jobs: "Because of all the investment and the feed-in tariff, we could create an industry which has an additional 30-odd thousand jobs across the whole sector." Manufacturing jobs are another area to watch out for, with the recent Chartered Institute of Purchasing and Supply/Markit purchasing managers' index stating that the sector has grown at its fastest rate for 15 years so far in 2010. The weaker sterling in Europe means that export orders have increased, leading to factories raising their prices and boosting their manufacturing jobs. Improving the situation further is the news that many firms are moving their manufacturing business back to the UK, after relocating a number of years ago. Figures from manufacturers organisation the EEF showed that one in seven companies is doing this, as the UK has become "increasingly competitive and efficient" over the past few years. The EEF's chief economist Lee Hopley told the BBC that manufacturers are looking for quality, customer service and delivery times, meaning that cheaper costs of manufacturing jobs are not always the number one consideration.
