Blockbuster movies like "Painted Skin: The Resurrection" have gained a lot of attention at the 15th Shanghai International Film Festival. But let’s not forget those medium-and-small-budget movies. Once again, this year’s event has put these lesser known films into the spotlight during Saturday’s launching of the China Movie Channel Media Awards. Renowned Kong fu movie star Jackie Chan, together with several rising directors and actors, launched this year’s China Movie Channel Media Awards at the Shanghai International Film Festival. The Media Award is aimed at promoting medium-and-small-budget homegrown movies and exposing talented young directors and actors. Selected from 200, 11 films compete for awards including Best Picture, Best Director, Best Actor and Best Actress. It’s a great opportunity for new faces in the film industry. Actor Qiao Renliang said, "Thanks to the Media Awards, I can make my appearance here. It’s a great platform for small-budget movies and young actors like me. And it also offers more options for movie lovers." However, small budget does not mean small audience. Take the nominated movie "First Time" for example. The romance film was a box office hit, thanks mostly to a young audience as well as its high artistic quality. Chen Ziqiu, producer of “First Time”, said, "Most of the movie crew are post-80s, so this movie was shot from a young audience’s perspective. I think this is why the movie is a hit among the young people." Launched in 2004 by the Movie Channel of China Central Television, the Media Awards is in its 9th edition.
