BEIJING, May 27 -- Zhang Yuxiang, from Pingchang, Sichuan Province, begins his day’s work at Stone Logistics, which specializes in transport and removal, at 6:30 am and sometimes stops work as late as 10 or 11 pm. But Zhang says he’s quite used to such a schedule. He and his co-workers wear blue company outfits with the logo, and sweat under the early summer sun, carrying heavy items. In addition, they do not have weekends and holidays. They are definitely allowed to ask for leave, but it would be unpaid. Zhang says he came to Beijing just before the Olympics in 2008. He was 28 and was hoping to improve his life. He has not married, but he says he is quite satisfied with his job, despite the hardship. This kind of job demands more than just physical fitness, according to Zhang. He says all prospective employees have to undergo several days of training, learning how to make full use of a container, how to pack valuables. They also have a 3-month probationary period. Five workers including a driver work together to help a family that is moving house. One of them, Wang Xiaofeng from Yunnan Province, says with a loud laugh “I used to be very strong and fat when I came here one year ago, but this job uses up all my energy and has made me lose weight.” Six workers share one 10 square-meter dorm provided by the company, and Zhang says the conditions are better than at other companies. He says they have access to a television and would also be able to play billiards but they simply don’t have the time. They also don’t have time to have breakfast, and have lunch whenever they finish the morning’s assignment. The workers are responsible for the items they transport, and could be asked to pay compensation if they are damaged.
