A second sheet, placed on the sheet covering a mattress, is referred to as a flat sheet. We need to be careful in purchasing flat sheets: not only do they have a profound effect on the appearance of our bedroom but, more importantly, are also a deciding factor for a good night’s sleep – and so, indirectly affect how we go about our daily life. It is due to these reasons that picking out something as trivial as bed sheets becomes a perplexing and daunting experience for many. However, with access to the right information and the courage to do a bit of online research, choosing the right sheet can be as easy as anything. Comfort and durability are the two foremost factors that need to be kept in mind while looking for flat sheets that will make a great addition to your bedroom. The breathability of the fabric from which the sheet has been woven is crucial for comfort. Some fabrics favored for their breathability include Pima cotton, Egyptian cotton, linen and silk. Real silk sheets are expensive and have to be dry cleaned. Cotton polyester blends that are at least half cotton by composition, are also great because they have the added benefit of being free of wrinkles. The smoothness of the weave of the sheet is also responsible for comfort. Some commendable types include flannel, sateen and percale. The comfort of damask and Jacquard weaves depends on the standard of quality of the manufacturer. Jersey knits, comparatively new additions to the market are compared to T-shirts in terms of comfort. Thread count of flat sheets is an important consideration for both durability and comfort. The method of counting threads has changed greatly due to globalization of the industry, but in broad terms, sheets with thread counts ranging from 200 to 500 are regarded as durable and comfortable. Stitching is another factor that affects the quality of the sheet. All but the highest quality silk sheets have seams in the bodies and all sheets, without exception, have stitched hems and possibly, sewn border details. For the sheet to be durable, hems have to be lying flat and double stitched. Sewn border details are a purely cosmetic enhancement and have no effect on comfort or quality. Flat sheets come in many different sizes and there are plenty of tables online detailing various sizes for buyers to consult so as to find the one that is best for them. When purchasing sheets online e.g. on eBay, the buyer will have the freedom to pick a sheet based on a plethora of parameters such as bed size, pieces being sought, color, type of fiber of course, pricing. It is also a good idea to check user opinion about the seller you’re interested in. In conclusion, it can be said that buying flat sheets has never been easier – mainly due to power to purchase over the internet – all one needs is some knowledge and a little persistence.
