The United States Medical Licensing Examination, commonly known as USMLE, may be termed as a method of medical tutoring and a series of trials that medical students and doctors must pass in order to get a license to practice medicine in the United States. These tests came into existence in order to have a standard for everyone whosoever wishes to treat patients in the United States. There are four separate exams which medical students and doctors must pass during their education before beginning patient care. These exams are also known as the USMLE Steps. The USMLE Step 1 is a test which is basically meant for the medical students of basic sciences. This exam is usually taken after the first two years of medical education. This enables the medical students to proceeds with all their fundamental requirements like Biochemistry, Anatomy, Physiology and Microbiology. The USMLE Step 2 is known as Clinical Knowledge. It is again a standardized test. This exam examines the medical students' ability to apply their patient care knowledge. This test is taken before the graduating medical school but later completing the core clinical rotations which includes Family Medicine, Internal Medicine, Surgery, Obstetrics and Gynecology. There is one more test in this step called Clinical Skills which is conducted to test the students' skills of understanding and treating the patients one-by-one. This test is conducted before completing medical school. In this test, the students are monitored on the basis of their kinship with patients and treatment plans. The USMLE Step 3 is a two-part test which lasts for two days. On the first day, test questioning from doctors is done related to basic and critical patient care. On the second day, physicians chart the case reports of the patient from the beginning till the end of care. This test must be completed after graduating medical school but before the completion of residency training. The USMLE exam is a must for every medical practitioner before getting his/her license to practice medicine in the United States. The severity of passing these medical exam in the very first attempt with a high percentage will determine the career path of the medical practitioner because their choice of medical specialty is decided by residency committees only after looking for the best candidate fro the interview for taking him/her into their residency program. For example, an ace score of 99% in the first attempt will guarantee a General Surgery Residency interview and residency position in a metropolitan area of the country.
