China's Lu Yuxia captured her first victory in 12 years on Saturdaywhen she beat Japan's Miho Mori in a first-hole playoff at the500,000 RMB Beijing Pearl Challenge, the first tournament of theChina LPGA Tour's fourth season. After lipping out on a 30-foot birdie putt on the final hole ofregulation, the 35-year-old Lu, who carded a 69 for a two-under-par214, took advantage of an error-filled extra hole by Mori who hadclosed with 70. With Mori finding a bunker on her second shot at the par-five 18thon the extra hole, Lu safely was on the green in three shots. Onher third shot, the 19-year-old Mori then hit a greenside bunkerand chipped to within 12-feet of the pin and missed her putt.
The veteran Lu, with two putts from 35 feet, made no mistake andcalmly claimed the 75,000 RMB winner's purse. "I thought about the win before the final round and I was six shotbehind (at the start of the day). I'm calm during the round andlucky because I chipped in at the 11th hole (from 10-yards out). Atthe 16th hole I saw the leader board and found out I was on top.
Iwas happy but soon I calmed down," said the Beijing-based Guangdongnative. With a six-year-old daughter at home, Lu dedicated the win to her"great family" who had supported her through good times and bad. "I'm very excited. It's been a long while since my last win, but Inever gave up.
In those 12 years I lost many cards, but this year Ifeel good about my game so I'm positive before this tournament." Speaking through an interpreter, Mori could only express herdisappointment. "I'm very disappointed. I missed the second shot from the bunker(in the playoff). I think I can play well in the playoff," said theNagoya native who turned pro last summer. Pan Yanhong, the former weightlifter, finished one shot out of theplayoff after carding a 68 in a round that featured five birdiesand a lone bogey.
Chinese Taipei's Yeh Hsinning, the overnight leader, ballooned to afinal round 77 to finish two shot back, tied with teammate YaoHsuan-yu (74) and China's Zhang Na (72) who suffered a double bogeyseven at the last in her first tournament back since giving birthto a son in January. Zhang overshot the green at the 18th and then three-putted to fallout of contention after posting a birdie at the hole previous. "I just wanted to put my ball in the center of the green, butunfortunately it went over the green. I thought I could get up anddown and tie Lu Yuexia and play in the playoff," she said.
"Butit's okay. This is my first comeback event. I have regrets but whenyou have regrets you can improve yourself. So I'm looking forwardto the next event in Shanghai.
I think I can win." The fourth year of the CLPGA Tour features eight events, culminating in the Hyundai China Ladies Open this December inXiamen, Fujian province. The next event is the Shanghai Classic,June 7-9 at Orient (Shanghai) Sports and Country Club.
