When you've had jewelry for a while it's not that unusual to find it gradually starting to lose its sheen. This is something you might not even notice - over time it collects tony scratches, gets tarnished and has tiny pieces come off. It's so gradual that you probably won't see it, but were you to compare a ring or pendant as it is now to how it once was, you would probably find that it looked significant different. Fortunately there are some ways you can clean your jewelry yourself and there are likewise ways to repair it and to ensue it looks as good as new again. These involve using a sonic cleaner, going to a jewelry etc. The first thing you will want to do is to clean your jewelry of any marks or tarnishing and there are a couple of methods you can use here. If your jewely is looking dull or marked then chances are that it is stained or tarnished, or that it has become greasy. You can solve this by thorough cleaning. At home one way to do this is with either baking soda or lemon. In either case the solution is acidic enough that it can get into the small spaces and burn away at the mess that has clogged it up. You can use this by dipping a cloth in some solution and then using it to rub your item. There are downsides to this however and there are reasons this is less effective than using a sonic cleaner. For one using a cloth means you can't quite get into the tiniest cracks and details in your rings and pendants. A cotton bud may be useful for the most difficult to reach sections but is still ultimately too large. Another problem is that lemon can be too strong for silver and may permanently damage it. Make sure that you are careful to read up on your jewelry before doing anything too hasty. A sonic cleaner works differently. Here the ring or other item is dropped into a solution before ultrasonic frequencies are applied. These frequencies are enough to cause tiny high pressure bubbles to form, and when these bubbles come into contact with grease or dirt they are able to erode it off. These can get into all the smallest cracks which is what makes an ultrasonic washer so thoroughly effective. You can use ultrasonic washers either at home with a tabletop ultrasonic washer, or at a jewelers. There may still be other problems with your jewelry however. It may be that it is scratched or chipped for instance and in this case it's a good idea to take it to a jewelers. They will be able to repair multiple aspects of your rings and to replace parts if necessary. This means either replacing the stone, the band or the clasp in order to help you maintain the sentimental value of your items even if they aren't usable anymore in their current form.
