They keep telling us that the book in its common paper format is dead and that the eReader is the saviour of the printed word. So, what are the benefits, but also the downfalls of these devices so commonly seen on daily deals sites such as Groupon Belfast? we look into the pluses and negatives of the eReader when compared to the paper equivalent and you can figure should you consider a purchase. Portability Of course, one of the most often heard of advantages of an eReader is the portability it offers. Unlike a book which can weigh you down, especially in the dozens - as those who truly love reading. A eReader allows you to take potentially hundreds of books wherever you like and it weighs only a slight weight. This portability offers you amazing opportunities to read where ever you want. Some of these devices are lower in weight and also have a smaller physical footprint than a small paperback book. Technology Anyone who has ever used a eReader, or purchased on a daily deal site will know the amazing technology that goes into these increasingly wafer thin devices. By simply moving a few buttons around you have a whole thesaurus and dictionary at hand and can look up any word. It doesn't stop there, you can link the book up on a number of devices and mark a page to continue on others if you require. eReaders also have access to the Internet, allowing you to browse your daily deals with ease. And, just like as is the case with most Internet enabled devices, you can download a book within minutes from anywhere in the world. With a choice of millions on offer it may seem a lot easier than having to go to the book store. Screen Unlike tablets and computers, these little devices use a screen called an eInk screen. This screen looks like and has the texture of a real book. Computer screens which have glare, bright screens make it a lot harder to read books - up to 25 per cent according to studies. The eInk screens on devices such as these makes it as easy to read as a book, yet also allows for the aforementioned luxuries. Cost Buying books from a eBook provider is often a lot cheaper than purchasing a physical copy. Not only this, but there are also a number of books which have run out of copyright and so are completely free to download. Though they say there's no such thing as a free supper, this doesn't seem to be the case here as most of the books on offer for free are timeless classics from the likes of Dickens, Woolfe and now Joyce. Downsides Everything that goes up must come down and in the case of eReaders there are a few downsides. Though the readers mean you can walk around with thousands of books in your pocket, many of us will miss the humble book and the physical appeal it has. Turning pages won't be the same on a eReader and to have an eReader library would mean having billions of copies of the same books on technology that all looks the same - not so attractive - no more leather bound books, though lower costs with Belfast deals. We will also lose out on the cover art and a number of those other exciting little features that a real book provides. Books have been around since Guttenburg invented the printing press over 600 years ago and so are more ingrained in our psyche than CDs, records or tapes ever were, it will be interesting to see where this move towards the virtual book goes.
