Early earthlings lived with animals and insects that are now mostly considered as a nuisance. They did not need pest control then. The notion was yet unheard of even if dangerous wild animals preyed on their young. Men in the tribes knew how to deal with the large animals. Insects like flies and mosquitoes were not that much of a problem to them. Some of the large animals, particularly dinosaurs, have already become extinct. Man learned to live in houses and communities while insects and other animals continued their primitive existence that only changed according to how man’s advanced civilisation affected them. Some animals such as cats and dogs were domesticated by man for emotional, practical, psychological and social reasons. Although science studies all life forms on earth making us familiar with most animals, insects and plants, we generally live apart from these lower organisms. Many of them have become a nuisance to us. Agriculture was developed by man from his early days so he may consistently have a good supply of food. It was also considered by stray and wild animals as God-given food and claims ownership on them as well. Since its early developmental stages, plants are plagued by insects and their larvae as their source of food. The damage they wreak on crops had them branded as insect pests. Insecticides and pesticides were formulated to counter and prevent damage. As plants grow and bear fruit, they become targets as food for larger animals affirming their claim to the bounties of nature. Fowls from the air swoop on the produce and deprive man of his share if nothing is done about it. Rodents attack on ground and from underground destroying leaves, roots and stalks that kill whole plants. They truly have become pests. House construction for man to live in became abundant and easy opportunities for termites to find food. They thrive on the wooden materials that make up the home. Any dead organic material such as cardboard is food for the blind insects. They mean no harm but in the process of their nutrition, they destroy property. So they become hated pests that have to be eradicated. But they are the most difficult pests to get rid of. They live in elaborate colonies numbering from several hundred to several million. Many insecticide formulations have been tried on these white ants. Many of these substances successfully kill those that are in the wood material but the sheer numbers that move to and from the village-wide colony cannot be overcome by simple methods. It requires the expertise of advanced pest management professionals to get rid of the nuisance once and for all. They cut the problem at its roots. But beware, a queen and her brood from a nearby colony may reinhabit the old one. Good thing we have experts in pest control always around to help us. Do you need pest control?
