Why choose long-term employee schemes instead of one-off incentives?

Staff retention and motivation are likely to be among the most difficult problems you have to tackle while running your business. There is no solution that works for every individual, but you may discover that organising employee schemes with rewards packages helps to improve team performance.

Offering staff incentives based on results is far from a revolutionary idea and many companies use it in some business units. For example, most salesmen have the opportunity to earn commission or bonuses dictated by their figures.

You may also have used a one-off rewards scheme, perhaps for the completion of work on an important order or to help motivate employees during a difficult period. If you have found this to be effective, it may be a good idea to look at the benefits of a long-term programme.

Anything that can help to develop an environment in which workers want to do their jobs well and help the company become more successful on an ongoing basis is sure to be worthwhile.

Many major private sector employers have already taken steps to foster performance-based cultures. They offer things like enhanced employee benefits packages linked to individual results and an annual bonus for the whole workforce based on the organisation's financial figures.

The thinking behind those ideas is that the chance to earn rewards for strong long-term performance helps to keep staff members focused on their jobs. To ensure they have the best chance of securing the bonuses, workers need to be aware of exactly what is expected of them and understand the importance of hard work - two things that are sure to benefit the company.

There are reasons other than employee retention and motivation to run this kind of scheme. Among them is that you will have to analyse the performance of individuals closely, which will present you with data useful for planning jobs and determining promotions.

You may well think this sort of scheme sounds expensive, particularly if you run a small or medium-sized business. However, there are a number of alternatives that may be more practical, affordable and appropriate for your organisation.

There are companies that specialise in organising staff rewards programmes and may have ideas you had not previously thought of. They should be able to advise you about what is suitable for your firm, whether that be a simple idea such as offering gift vouchers as a reward for hitting targets or a more extensive bespoke scheme.
