Get familiar with the basics of ultrasonic cleaners!

Business
Essentially, the industrial ultrasonic cleaners refer to a cleaning device that uses water, solvents and frequencies ranging from 20 to 400 kHz. The applications of the ultrasound cleaners are quite various and range from removing easy, plastic injection molds dirt to nuclear contamination of metal components and anything in between. To be fair, whether or not an ultrasonic cleaner is the right unit for the job depends on the type of contaminant and the material of the part. In case you are trying to remove a coating that contains chemicals, then the cleaning can be done with simple water. In all other situations, it is advisable that a solvent solution is added as well.

One of the primary advantages of the industrial ultrasonic cleaners is that they can leave the parts and their surfaces free of any pollutants or coatings. However, given that there is a chance for water and detergent spots during the precision cleaning process, rinsing is important. One solution proposed by the manufacturers of the ultrasonic cleaners is to avoid adding tap water and replace it with de-ionized water. Alternatively, you can purchase a device that includes several rinsing tanks that contribute and help keep the appropriate water purity in the final tank.

Speaking of solvents, it is worth pointing out that the detergent selection plays an important part in the end cleaning results. Basically, the detergent needs to include a mixture of ingredients compatible with the part as well as the ultrasonic cleaner. At the same time, it needs to be powerful enough to eliminate the coating, contaminants or other substances that you are trying to remove in the first place. In addition, certain detergents are known to reduce the performance of the ultrasonic unit’s scrubbing action. Even though the cleaning fluid can help overcome the performance decrease, it is advisable to stick with the detergents recommended by the retailers.

Depending on the cleaning needs, a company can choose from four primary types of frequencies. It is important to note that the higher the frequency of the industrial ultrasonic cleaners, the gentler the washing process will be on the parts and equipment. The best thing on the market these days are the units operating on multi frequencies systems, especially due to the evenly cleaning they ensures and the scrubbing power they provide. At the opposite end, the lower frequency units, such as the ones operating on 25 kHz, are intended for a powerful cleaning action and are designed to handle washing large parts or stubborn stains and contaminations.

Take note that at times, when the parts present small cracks and when the wrong unit is used for the washing task, then the industrial ultrasonic cleaners can damage components and equipment. To put it simple, it is advisable that you have a talk with the retailers and test the parts to see if they present sensitivities for cavitational erosion or vibrational resonance damage. The good news however, is that in most cases the additional damage issue is solved by equipping a sweep frequency circuit and a multi frequency ultrasonic cleaner system.
