Galway - Ireland's County of Culture

Galway is undoubtedly Ireland's capital of culture and the home of its arts community. The city has always been a place where outsiders were welcome and one that saw huge influence from a diverse array of cultures. It has also been a stronghold of Irish culture and is still home to the country's largest Gaeltacht and Irish speaking areas.

Galway deals give you the chance to explore the magnificence of this cultural city and all that goes with it.

Galway Races

One thing Galway is famous for is its festivals and celebrations. The city is home to a number of the country's largest fairs and the largest of these is questionably the Galway Races.

The Races are where all of Ireland's elite, rich, famous and wealthy hang out and is one of the country's largest celebrations. Galway is not merely a horse race, but in fact just a huge party. The area is also home to a smattering of cultural festivals and the Galway Arts Festival is the best of the numerous opportunities that the area has to offers.

Galway Festivals

The Galway festival is a colourful celebration of culture and is as close as Ireland gets to creating an Edinburgh festival. The city turns into a stage for performances, theatre and the good life. If it is food your after Galway's Guinness and Oyster Festival offers the best of all of this. The amorous shell fish and the pint of plain are combined to spectacular effect and produce a fine mix for those looking for a party.

Of course Galway is not just about partying and festivals and there is a significant amount of culture to be found in the City of the Tribesmen. The area is rich in history dating right back to the coming of the Celts to Ireland. The greatest place to see this IS on the Aran Islands. This place synonymous with the jumpers of the same name offers a variety of buildings and archeologically remains from the time of the Celts – The most obvious of these is the fort of Dun Aongus which is half collapsed into the Atlantic Ocean.

The Gaeltacht

Galway's Gaeltacht areas of Connemara and the often sang about stone walls and rocky fields is one of the most astounding sites in the whole of the country. There is something that is timeless about these tiny fields and the small house scattered across the landscape.

Salt Hill

Easily accessed by train or by road, the city and the surrounding country side are a worthwhile visit, whether you haven't been there for a while, or are coming for further afield for a visit.
