In today’s fast-moving business world, it is increasingly important to stay in touch with far-flung offices around the world at all times, as well as to distribute information to the public at large. Corporate video has become a key tool for business use. By corporate video we can define any form of audio-visual materials used in the workplace. This can include training materials on DVD or housed on a website, live streaming video used for meetings and point-to-point communications, and high-definition video for corporate announcements, press conferences and other uses. Typically these uses are for a very limited audience, either within a corporation or for interested outsiders like the press or investors. There are many types of corporate videos. The human resource department is a heavy user, providing training and safety videos and using them as part of the orientation and induction process for new employees. Investor relations is a large consumer of this resource as well, offering annual and semi-annual corporate performance results, press releases and giving access to senior management staff in a controlled environment through webcast interviews and question and answer sessions. Video is also used in the new product introduction process, providing user guides, tips and tricks for the consumer. In this case a customized website may be created for public use. The production process for corporate video is usually in three stages; first is pre-production, where the script is written and the action laid out on a storyboard. A budget is created and agreed upon and the video is cast. Many videos use professional actors, particularly for commercial-type and other content intended for the public, but some in-house talent is utilized as well. Next comes the actual production and shooting of the video, either on location or within the corporate facility. Finally the footage is edited and goes through the post-production process, which may include recording a voice-over commentary, adding graphics and music, or other video effects. The finished video is then ready for release. In the release stage, the completed video (after being approved by management and corporate legal staff) is generally placed on the company website. Links are provided via an email announcement to all interested parties, or an announcement is made on the homepage of the website itself. As an alternative, a DVD can be produced and distributed by mail or sometimes made available at trade shows or other large gatherings to ensure the widest possible audience for the corporate message.
