Bill Gates the founder of Microsoft has been the wealthiest person in the world. Bill was the perfect model for American entrepreneurial spirit. Coming from an upper middle class family he dropped out of college and started building computers. Eventually his business grew to a mega-corporation. Carlos Slim Hulu’s company America Movil, which is Latin Americas larges mobile phone operator, has earned more money than Microsoft. Actually there is a 9 billion dollar difference between Slim and Bill. It is amazing how fast the landscape changes. How did it happen? Apparently there was a rise of 26.5% in the stock price of American Movil during the second quarter. Since Slim owns 33% of the company he actually flew past Gates in terms of paper wealth. Stock prices can fluctuate so there is no guarantee that this will be the case a year from now. Slim has a personal empire worth 67.8 billion dollars while Bill Gates fortune is around 59 billion dollars. Slim built his fortune from now only being a heavy investor in America Movil but also Inbursa Financial group and the Grupo Carso Industrial Firm. He also has interest in retail store, restaurants and other service type industries. Slim isn’t your typical Mexican. He is actually of Arabic descent. He is the son of Lebanese immigrants who came to Mexico and started a small business. Thus Slim has been engaged in business his whole life. He has learned that struggling is a way of life and he never gives up on his goals. What helped slim to make himself wealthy was his keen ability to see opportunity where others don’t see it. For example in the 80’s when businesses were hurting Slim bought them up and made a fortune. He even bought Apple shares for $17.00 and they quickly rose to $100.00 dollars. The changing of status of the wealthiest person in the world indicates a shift in the world economy. Even though the U.S. is the wealthiest nation in the world countries like China may at some point pass the U.S.’s GNP within the next 10 years. Slims success indicates that wealth, money and investment can succeed in other countries as well. Slim’s success can also show us Americans that even a lowly beginning of immigrant parents can be overcome on our continent. Striving, believing in yourself, and working hard can get you to a point in your life where success can be had. Obviously in slims case he is much more than successful.
